DIXIE
DIRT – Pieces of the World (Site) By turns peacefully ethereal and then sonically disturbing, Dixie Dirt are reminiscent of Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth, with a fair amount of Cowboy Junkies thrown in for good measure.  About half the songs are instrumentals, the rest feature a female vocalist who sounds like a cross between Sinead O’Connor and Bjork with a southern accent.  The fact is that it’s a bit too long, and there are too many sleep inducing moments, but still, there’s something intriguing here.  Maybe if I was stoned.  Or maybe just in smaller doses, say one or two songs at a time.  Too much to digest all in one sitting, though. -Brian Mosher
